Question of the month

What is the difference between repossession and a replayed ball?

Quick Answer: A replayed ball is when a player regains possession of the ball they never properly lost, while repossession is when a player touches the ball again after releasing it before anyone else or the post has touched it. They sound similar, but the rulebook treats them as two different infringements.

Outcome: Free pass awarded to the non-offending team.

🏐 What replayed ball means

A replayed ball happens when a player has possession, loses control of the ball, and then picks it up again without it being touched by another player. Examples include:

  • Dropping the ball and picking it straight back up

  • Deliberately bouncing the ball more than once and then catching it

  • Tossing the ball to yourself in a controlled way and catching it again

This is considered incorrect playing of the ball because the player effectively “plays the ball twice” while still in possession.

🏐 What repossession means

Repossession is more specific: A player may not touch the ball again after releasing it until it has:

  • Touched another player, or

  • Rebounded off the goalpost

If they do touch it again too soon, it’s repossession.

Example:

  • A wing attack throws a pass, it hits their own leg or the floor, and they grab it again before anyone else touches it → repossession.

  • Playing the Ball & Repossession – Totally Netball / England Netball Playing the Ball & Repossession

🧠 Easiest way to remember

  • Replayed ball = double play while still in possession

  • Repossession = touching your own pass before anyone else does

About us

Lincoln Netball League was established over 25 years ago by the legend that is Joyce Smith, The league is run by a small team of dedicated netballers whose only purpose, once we finish coaching, mentoring, umpiring and playing, is to enable you to do the same. And hopefully enjoy it as much as we do!

The league is made up of three divisions: Premier, Division 1 and Division 2. We run a summer and winter league every year, playing on the outdoor courts at Yarborough Leisure Centre. We also run two tournaments a year: St Barnabas - entry is as a team and all monies raised goes towards our local hospice, St Barnabas; and Versatility, where entry is as an individual and teams are generated from across all three divisions as well as new players. Lastly, there are a number of friendlies that are played between seasons.
