Question of the month

What is the difference between contest and contact?

Quick Answer: In netball, contest means two players fairly competing for the ball or position without interfering with each other’s play, while contact means physical interference (accidental or deliberate) that unfairly affects an opponent’s ability to play. The distinction is central to netball’s identity: it’s often described as a non-contact sport, but in reality, contesting is allowed while contact is penalised. This balance ensures the game remains competitive, fair, and safe.

⚖️ Contest in Netball

  • Definition: A contest occurs when players challenge each other for the ball or position in a way that is fair and within the rules.

  • Key Features:

    • Both players have equal opportunity to play the ball.

    • Physical closeness or incidental contact is allowed if it doesn’t disadvantage the opponent.

    • Examples:

      • Two players jumping for a rebound, both with a chance to catch.

      • A defender marking closely but not interfering with the shooter’s action.

  • Outcome: Play continues uninterrupted because no unfair advantage is gained.

🚫 Contact in Netball

  • Definition: Contact is called when a player’s actions interfere with an opponent’s play, whether intentional or accidental.

  • Types of Contact:

    • Interference: Physical contact that causes loss of the ball, disrupts passing/shooting, or changes body position unfairly.

    • Causing Contact: Includes moving into the path of a player without giving them time/space, or landing in another player’s space.

  • Examples:

    • Pushing or holding an opponent.

    • Jumping into a stationary player.

    • Knocking a shooter’s arm during a shot.

  • Outcome: Penalised with a penalty pass awarded to the non-offending team.

Please also inform any of the committee members prior to using photography equipment. If any minors are involved, parental consent must also be sought. Once all that is done, you're good to go!

Alternatively, if you want to take team photos, do it in areas where there is no-one in the background :)

About us

Lincoln Netball League was established over 25 years ago by the legend that is Joyce Smith, The league is run by a small team of dedicated netballers whose only purpose, once we finish coaching, mentoring, umpiring and playing, is to enable you to do the same. And hopefully enjoy it as much as we do!

The league is made up of three divisions: Premier, Division 1 and Division 2. We run a summer and winter league every year, playing on the outdoor courts at Yarborough Leisure Centre. We also run two tournaments a year: St Barnabas - entry is as a team and all monies raised goes towards our local hospice, St Barnabas; and Versatility, where entry is as an individual and teams are generated from across all three divisions as well as new players. Lastly, there are a number of friendlies that are played between seasons.
